BC Real Estate And COVID-19: What Buyers And Sellers Should Know

Like most of the world right now, British Columbia is battling the coronavirus. The province has enacted measures such as social distancing, restrictions on gatherings, and the closing of non-essential businesses to try to slow down the spread and flatten the curve. While there is some evidence that these initial measures are having an impact, it appears as though this virus will affect our daily lives for the foreseeable future.

Many people were involved in real estate transactions when this outbreak hit. Some people were planning to move, or they are wondering if they can still buy or sell a house in the era of coronavirus. Given the general uncertainty around real estate, it seemed fitting to do a post on the status of BC real estate and what professionals, such as myself, are doing in this crisis to keep everyone safe.

The BC Real Estate Market Is Safe And Open

The provincial government declared that real estate agents are an essential service. This declaration means that real estate agents and real estate-focused businesses can continue to operate within the province - safely, of course. Real estate businesses must adhere to the current BC and Canadian health guidelines, like any other enterprise operating within the country today.

Going Digital

When the provincial government declares a business as essential, it is trusting that the industry will find a way to keep people safe during this crisis. I'm proud to say this industry has risen to that challenge. Our processes ensure the safety of all parties. 

The best way that real estate professionals in this country can keep their clients safe is to go digital whenever possible. This industry is embracing digital technology to make sure everyone feels safe and secure when buying a house. Open houses can now be virtual. You won't have to leave your home to buy a property. When you put in an offer, that's all online as well.

To illustrate just how serious this industry is taking protecting real estate agents and clients, lawyers can now take affidavits for land title applications remotely. Before COVID-19, you had to go into the office and appear in-person. 

The Real Estate Industry Takes Social Distancing Seriously

If for some reason, you still need to go to an office where two parties need to sign a paper at the same time, lawyers will present two copies of the same contract, with each party standing at least 2 metres apart. You'll each sign your copy of the agreement to prevent the possible spread of this virus.

Similarly, if, perchance, you need to meet with your real estate agent in-person, they will maintain proper social distancing protocols as well. Our goal is to ensure you feel safe and secure at all points in the transaction.

Buying And Selling Within BC Is Safe

To buy or sell real estate in British Columbia these days, you won't have to break any social distancing guidelines, and you certainly won't need to leave your house. This industry has responded admirably to the complexities of COVID-19 to ensure a safe experience for everyone.
